Congrats to our main man Steven Reker for winning the American Dance Institute’s second annual Solange MacArthur Award for New Choreography. It was announced in the New York Times and we’ll quote them: “The award recognizes a rising American choreographer with financial and administrative support for presenting a commissioned work. Mr. Reker said in a statement that the award, which includes a $10,000 commission, would allow him to create ‘a piece I have wanted to make for years but could only imagine making since my resources are somewhat limited in NYC.’”
This one is a super big deal folks. Like, total biggie. Next stop is Lincoln Center’s American Songbook on February 27th. Tickets here.

The conversation touches upon the Brooklyn and Philly music scenes, whether long band names are a thing, and how music can “sound expensive.” The tunes range from the happy to the forlorn, with a number of songs that seem to encompass both of those emotions at the same time. Artists include Dolly Parton, Cat LeBon, The Blue Nile, Allie X, Luke Temple, The Phenomenal Handclap Band, Teen, Little Wings, and almost half-dozen contributions from Jen’s various projects, including her contributions to recent albums by The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, A Sunny Day in Glasgow.

Here’s info from the series press release: “Brooklyn-based artist Steven Reker marries indie rock melodies and irresistible movement for an infectious blend of pop music and performance art. An alumnus of David Byrne’s touring band, composer for choreographer Jodi Melnick’s recent work at BAM, and guest musical curator for PS122, the interdisciplinary performer and founder of the music-dance project People Get Ready presents brand new material and invites shared exploration of an entirely new genre.”

PGR PASTE SESSION, ASHEVILLE NC
Here we are playing “Windy City” (with former drummer Ian Chang) last fall. The show was in the lounge of the Aloft hotel, where we also slept. After our set we drank whiskey by the fire and then staggered to our room and watched the Vincent Price classic The Tingler. Good times.
Steven and James talked about their favorite dinner party songs on the Dinner Party Download. We’re around the 8:00 mark, although if you listen to the whole ep you’ll learn a new joke and confront your fear of haggis.

PEOPLE GET READY ON WNYC SOUNDCHECK
Yesterday we played three new songs live on the air and talked with John Schaefer about the making of Physiques. (Here’s a video of us playing Soundcheck two years ago. We’ve lost almost all of the clothes we were wearing.) Thanks for having us, WYNC.
